I would like to share with you the wonderful experience we had with León, Robert and our teacher Prof. Estela Braun in Toay. This was a day of joy and great food!
Here's our didactic sequence on the topic of Food
Intercultural
Awareness
Topic:
FOOD
Pre-task:
- Introduction to the topic of food, and making general assumptions on possible differences between the local culture and the target one.
- A set of varied questions are going to be asked to both students and Robert, and they are open to discussion.
Questions:
What
do you usually have for breakfast?
Do
you usually enjoy meals with your family?
Which
do you think is your country’s national dish?
How
long does the meal last?
How
is the one in charge of cooking at home?
What
do you usually eat on Sundays?
How
does the talking during the meal?
Task:
So
as to consolidate the previous activity which involves auditory,
social & verbal learning,
a new task that involves other learning styles (e.g. kinesthetic
learning, visual learning)
should be included.
- Students could be asked to bring (if possible) a small snack typical of their home country. The native speaker could do the same thing and so together they could compare and contrast both snacks.
- If food is not allowed for some reason, students could bring pictures of a typical snack/dish of their own culture, or even film themselves cooking a recipe, showing the different steps of the procedure. The native speaker could do the same thing. Then during the multicultural class, both the students and the native speaker could talk about the different ingredients involved in the two procedures and the way the recipe is prepared.
